Artificial intelligence has moved from novelty to daily habit faster than researchers can measure it. About half of U.S. adults now report using AI chatbots, including roughly one in four who use them daily, and nearly two-thirds of teens ages 13 to 17 say they use them at least occasionally. In 2025 the APA issued health advisories on generative AI chatbots and wellness apps, concluding that even tools built on sound psychological science "do not have enough evidence to show that they are effective or safe" for mental health care. The advisories flag reports of serious harm to adolescents and other vulnerable users, gaps in regulation and data privacy, and the risk of AI systems impersonating licensed professionals. AI companionship has grown quickly: a 2025 Common Sense Media survey reported that more than 70% of U.S. teens had tried an AI companion, with over half using one at least monthly. The effect on loneliness appears to cut both ways. A joint MIT Media Lab and OpenAI study found that moderate, especially voice-based, use was associated with modestly lower loneliness — while heavy daily use tracked with greater loneliness, more emotional dependence, and less real-world socializing. Studies of active companion users echo this: people with fewer human relationships are more likely to seek out chatbots, and heavy emotional self-disclosure to AI is associated with lower well-being. Americans are, on balance, more wary than enthusiastic: roughly half say they are more concerned than excited about AI in daily life, and a majority want more control over how it is used. People appear especially reluctant to hand AI the domains where meaning is made — creative, romantic, and spiritual life.

The honest bottom line is modesty. What is reasonably well-established is that these tools are now widespread and that their effects depend heavily on how people use them. What remains preliminary or contested is nearly everything about long-term impact — on developing minds, on the texture of relationships, on the collective culture. The technology is young, the studies are younger, and the most useful posture is neither alarm nor celebration but careful, ongoing attention.
